Group Insurance Medical  

Group medical insurance is most commonly considered the most important benefit a company can offer its employees and the main criteria by which the total employee benefits package is evaluated. As such, a well-considered medical package that offers comprehensive coverage, an extensive carrier network and competitive employee/employer contributions is critical in attracting and retaining desirable employees.

Group medical insurance provides better coverage at a lower premium than any individual medical plan available. But due to rising costs, today it is common for the employer and employee to share in the associated expenses, and many vehicles are available (*such as HRAs, HSAs, FSAs, Section 125 plans, etc.) to offset the impact for both.

The most common group medical plans are:

  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)
  • Point of Service (POS) plans
  • and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans

though Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRAs) are gaining more recognition as of late.

Most plans are "fully insured", whereby the insurance company charges a premium based on their being wholly responsible for all risks associated with the medical coverage offered, but there are also plans available that are "minimum-funded" or "self-funded", which allow the employer to take on some or all of the risk.
