| Group dental insurance is the most frequently offered and/or requested group ancillary-type benefit. Dental plans provide partial or complete coverage for the many types of preventive, basic, major and orthodontic services provided by a general or specialty dentist. Group dental insurance provides more comprehensive dental coverage at a lower premium than any individual dental plan available. However, since dental insurance is considered a secondary benefit, it is common for the employer and employee to share in the monthly premiums. The most common group dental plans are "PPO" type plans and as such provide coverage both in and out of the carrier's network. Coverage in these plans is maximized when providers in the network are utilized, when calendar year maximums are considered in the scheduling of care (mostly non-urgent care), and when services are pre-certified or when a predetermination of coverage is done prior to receiving care. Network only type plans and discount only plans are also available, as are dental 'rider' plans which provide typically less comprehensive coverage through another line of insurance (usually group medical).
