Group Long Term Care (LTC) is an ancillary benefit that can provide coverage for individuals who may wind up needing help with Activities of Daily Living (ADL's) such as bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, continence, and transferring, as the result of illness, injury or advancing age. The assistance may be provided by friends, family members or professionals, at one's home or in a specialized facility. The need for LTC coverage is primarily considered for individuals approaching or currently in retirement, but long term care issues can and often do affect a large majority of individuals who are younger than sixty-five years of age. Group LTC coverage can help employees remain productive on the job, as it is becoming more and more common for employees to be stepping into the role of caregiver for a disabled family member, parent, an older relative or a friend. Additionally, such plans help to protect retirement savings so as not to have to use such funds to pay for the cost of a nursing home or of bringing a healthcare professional into the home. LTC plans supplement health insurance plans and/or government programs which on their own typically do not provide adequate care for long term issues. There are many tax incentives also available to businesses offering group long term care programs. Group LTC plans are a smart choice for employees of any age. Rates can be locked in at the age bracket for which the plan was initiated, and as such, the younger the applicant, the lower the cost for the term of the policy. Likewise, group LTC plans are a wise choice for employers to help protect against the financial impact of lost productivity and disruption in the workplace, and, since employers can 'class out' or individualize who would have the coverage, such plans can be customized or tailored to meet the employer and employees' needs.
