Group Insurance › Disability |
| Group disability insurance is second only to medical insurance in terms of importance and necessity. Group disability coverage provides employees with protection of their most important asset-their ability to earn an income, and as such, disability insurance should be considered essential. Such coverage is especially important in recruiting and/or retaining motivated, hard-working employees. Group disability plans can provide adequate stand-alone protection of one's income and/or their ability to earn that income, or they can supplement an individual plan if one is in place. The premiums for group disability plans are usually much more affordable than premium amounts for individual policies, and the ability to obtain coverage through a group plan is often much better than if one were to apply for like coverage on their own. Premiums can be contributory (where the employee pays all or some of the premium) or non-contributory (where the employer bears all the cost). Contributory plans are often preferred by employees since the premiums are low, but even more importantly, since if the employee pays for the premiums with after-tax dollars, their disability benefit would then be received tax-free. Most commonly, disability plans provide a benefit at a certain percentage of one's weekly or monthly income, usually 60% to a maximum amount. Employers can 'class out' their employees on such plans to offer a higher benefit level to managers or officers, and/or to offer the benefit only to a certain class or level of employees. The 'elimination period' (period of time after the disability occurs but before which one would be covered) and/or the benefit duration (the time period for how long an individual would be covered), whether or not to 'class out' employees, a suitable insurance carrier and the potential tax consequences for employees, are all key considerations when choosing a group disability plan.
