Individual medical plans are most commonly purchased by Sole Proprietors, individuals who have just started a business and currently do not have more than 2 full-time employees (minimum required to qualify for a group plan), and/or other individuals and families who are not currently eligible for medical coverage elsewhere. Individual medical plans generally provide less comprehensive coverage at a higher cost than group or government-sponsored plans, but are a necessity when coverage by other means is not available.

Before purchasing an individual medical plan, it is important to consider if group or government-sponsored coverage might be available — whether by new or current employment, former employment (i.e. by continuing coverage through COBRA or through a state continuation program if applicable), as a dependent of another covered person, and/or or by qualifying for state assistance plans or federal programs such as Medicare or Medicaid.
