Individual dental plans are most commonly purchased as a supplemental plan to current dental coverage, or as a stand alone plan that accompanies an individual medical plan. Individual dental plans are limited in their coverage and availability.

Before purchasing an individual dental plan, it is important to consider if group coverage might be available — whether by new or current employment, former employment (i.e. by continuing coverage through COBRA), as a dependent of another covered person, or as a 'rider' on, or part of the benefits included in, a current medical or vision plan.
